Meet one of our newest brands empowering artisans in East Africa. Swahili Coast works with worker owned co-ops that use fair trade practices and have positive working environments, while focusing on bringing the incredible artistry and talents of East African Artisans to global markets.
With Swahili Coast's "power over pity motto" they're empowering women through employment and community. Swahili Coast works mainly with women artisans who are the sole breadwinners for their families which is why the worker owned co-op is so important.

What is a worker owned co-op?
Swahili Coast explains it best, "At Swahili Coast, we don't maintain any ownership stake in the co-op; our artisan partners are 100% owners of the workshop, so they elect a board of directors that hires management, negotiates contracts, and serves as oversight. We (Swahili Coast) are always around to lend an ear and offer advice, but at the end of the day, it's up to the artisans to make the decisions about the direction they would like to take their business." I love this because worker owned co-ops allow the artisans to have a deeper understanding of business & grow as leaders.
Swahili Coast's jewelry is inspired by the bold colors & beauty of the Swahili Coast. Their bracelets are great for layering and their necklaces make great statement pieces. Check out their beautiful work. Shop all our Swahili Coast products here.
